There has always been a battle between social networking sites, Facebook and MySpace. While MySpace boasts 100 million members to Facebook 57 million members, there has always been a clear distinction between the two sites; Facebook was for college students and MySpace was for the general public.

Well not anymore. In 2007, Facebook opened its doors to everyone. No longer is Facebook a website where college students can mingle. Now, everyone and their mother (literally, my mom opened a Facebook account) can join.

I understand that newly added members will change the dynamic of the website but there is still a clear distinction between the two sites. As Dana Boyd points out in her blog, MySpace is Las Vegas and Facebook resembles Pottery Barn.

That "clean" or "modern" look of Facebook is akin to West Elm or Pottery Barn or any poshy Scandinavian design house (that I admit I'm drawn to) while the more flashy look of MySpace resembles the Las Vegas imagery that attracts millions every year."

To that, I can add that the sites are perceived by their users as such.

While I admit, I dabble in both sites, if I had to choose between the two, I would definitely be on the Facebook side. To me, the site seems more organized and all the profiles are more uniform. But then again, I am an upper-middle class college graduate.
