It used to be that the word ”troll” conjured up a mythical image of a small hideous beast (see below) or a doll with high hair and a gem in its belly (see below); however, today the word troll conjures a new image, that of the internet spammer  who creates chaos and trouble. 

These internet trolls or cyber bullies presumably enjoy spamming online communities with often inflammatory off-topic comments. These comments tend to taint serious discourse in these communities, which leads to frustrated members, yet there are few ways to stop and prevent cyber bullies from harassing other people.

Trolling is a problem in the information ecology of various online communities. But how can this issue be resolved without imposing strict rules or technologies that censor or restrict all members? Can this problem be resolved by the creation of new technologies?
