Welcome,
Re: Ambush Makeover: Intercollegiate Media Training
by Josh Centor
Some athletics departments have restricted student-athlete use of sites like Facebook and MySpace. While I don’t feel that this is appropriate, it is a statement of the times. Student-athletes, most of whom range in age from 18-22, should be free to use the Internet in the same way as other college students. As Shannon pointed out, however, they must be aware of the consequences. If you don’t want people to know you were out partying, don’t post the pictures. If you didn’t make it to class, don’t brag about it in a public forum. The Internet can be a scary place, and I agree that student-athletes could use some new media training to better understand the medium. One would hope that they can understand the high-profile nature of intercollegiate athletics and the fact that some people are watching every step they take.
