Welcome,
Re: IT as a road-block to professional communicators
by Steve O'Keefe
No, Dee -- not nearly 'nuff said on this topic. I work with many PR, Marketing, and Publicity departments, and almost as a rule I am banned from ever trying to connect with their IT departments. There is tremendous animosity between these divisions in most of the companies I consult with. It's time to put an end to that. One solution is for marketing people to get savvy about IT. In a sense, that's what's behind IAOC -- a need for communications people to have a comfortable place to learn the new technology. Another solution is to have hybrid employees that work part time in IT and part time in marketing. I've seen that work in several companies, where there is one designated geek in the marketing department who handles all liaison with IT. I'd recommend a third alternative -- that IT people try to learn a little about marketing -- but forget it. Why should they? They're in demand, earning the bucks -- why should they stoop to marketing? Thanks for raising this topic! STEVE O'KEEFE Vice President, IAOC
